In the following story, explore where their character strengths were demonstrated and helped them to overcome challenges and difficulties.

Mary Seacole
1805 - 1881
I was born Mary Jane Grant, in Kingston, on the island of Jamaica. My father was a Scottish soldier stationed on the island, and my mother was a Jamaican nurse and healer. Jamaica had been part of the British Empire since 1655, and most Jamaicans at this time were enslaved to British masters. My mother was a freewoman, which meant I was also born free. However, that didn’t mean I did not see or experience the pain of discrimination and prejudice because of the colour of my skin. I had to learn how to overcome how this made me feel. My mother was a Jamaican doctress who had extensive knowledge of traditional herbal remedies. This proved very valuable, as she ran a boarding house and many who stayed there were sick or injured soldiers.
