Relationship skills include the ability to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships and to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups.
This includes the capacity to communicate clearly, listen actively, cooperate, work collaboratively to problem-solve and negotiate conflict constructively, navigate settings with differing social and cultural demands and opportunities, provide leadership, and seek or offer help when needed.
Relationship skills are strengthened through community strength development and collaborative learning. Guidance is given across different subjects to take a strengths-based approach. The platform provides multiple opportunities for discussion and debate. Several oracy resources also encourage debate, role-play, interviewing and speech-making.
Bringing strengths into cross-curricular activity provides the opportunity for young people to explicitly practise relationship skills. Before starting a small group or team activity, staff remind the class of the need to practise their strengths in teamwork by listening and communicating clearly and well with each other.
