Lesson 4: When illness changes things This session helps children understand how serious illness can affect not only the person who is ill, but the people who love them too. Through Theo and Evie's Saturday, children explore the changes Theo experiences when his sister Evie is seriously ill and has to stay in hospital. Children consider how familiar routines, family time and relationships can change during serious illness. They explore Theo's conflicting feelings as he worries about Evie, feels disappointed about missing football, enjoys spending time with his sister and then feels sad when he has to leave her. The emphasis is on recognising that serious illness can bring experiences of loss even though the person we love is still with us. Children learn that they are allowed to have their own feelings, needs and happy moments alongside loving and worrying about someone who is seriously ill.
