Lesson 1: Tricky Friendship Moments This session helps children understand that friendships can sometimes change, feel different or become difficult. Through Mia and the Empty Seat, children explore what it can feel like when a friend plays with someone else, misunderstandings happen or a friendship no longer feels quite the way it did before. Through discussion, problem-solving activities and role play, children consider different points of view and explore positive ways to respond to tricky friendship moments. They learn that talking, listening and kindness can sometimes strengthen a friendship, but also that friendships may change and children may develop new relationships. The emphasis is on recognising the feelings of loss that can accompany changes in friendship, while helping children understand that nobody necessarily has to be at fault and not every friendship has to return to exactly how it was before.
