Description
This session helps children explore the feelings that can come with starting something new, such as beginning school, joining a club, moving house or meeting new people. It gently acknowledges that new beginnings can feel exciting, worrying, confusing or even a mixture of all three emotions at the same time. Through storytelling, role play, creative activities and discussion, children are encouraged to recognise that it is normal to miss familiar people, places or routines whilst discovering new friendships, experiences and opportunities. They learn that new things may feel unfamiliar at first but can gradually become more comfortable with time, support and encouragement. The emphasis is not on being brave or ignoring difficult feelings, but on understanding that it is okay to have mixed emotions. Children are supported to build confidence, develop a sense of belonging and recognise that trusted adults and friends can help them navigate new experiences.
