Our 24 strengths have been grouped into six areas: strengths of the head, the heart, action, community, meaning, and self-regulation. Each area has four strengths. This framework offers an easy-to-use structure for teachers to introduce the language of strengths in the classroom.
It encourages discussions about balancing strengths, and along with the role model stories, can help to illustrate how strengths can be applied effectively. Teachers can guide pupils in understanding when to amplify or dial back certain strengths, based on the situation, fostering “practical wisdom”.
How character strengths support mental health
Research in positive psychology has shown us that people who know their strengths and use them frequently tend to feel happier, have better self-esteem, and are more likely to accomplish their goals.
Strengths are natural capabilities and skills that every person has. When a person uses their strengths, they tend to feel energised, and they report higher levels of self-esteem, wellbeing, and other desirable outcomes.
Foster an inclusive environment and help young people achieve their goals as well as build supportive relationships with our “strengths of” guides.
