Welcome to SMILE!


SMILE is a tool for helping children and teachers master Singapore Bar Modelling, Simple Word Problems, and the Mathematical Structures that sit behind them.


Soon you’ll be SMILEing on any word or story problem! You’ll be able to identify the best physical or mental image, create the appropriate Bar Model, use the correct Technical Language and identify both the Story and Solving Equations!

Structure Videos

As a teacher and a maths consultant I have been acutely aware of the difficulties many children face when tackling word problems. Following my research into the Mastery Approach and Singapore Bar Modelling, I developed SMILE to provide a simple, step-by-step approach to help children successfully solve such word problems.

Each SMILE video reasons through the process of finding answers to simple word problems that are underpinned by a specific mathematical structure. Each one includes the systematic construction of appropriate imagery, Bar Models and the identification of relevant equations. Videos 2, 3 and 6 explore the same word problems from the perpective of two inverse structures.

Multi-Step Word Problems

The final two videos in this series dig a bit deeper and feature multi-step Word Problems that include both the addition concept of total and the subtraction concept of difference.

These problems are presented using a Comparison Bar Model and naturally build on the examples found in the previous videos.
