6 of the simplest and best-loved Christmas Crafts

We asked our teacher friends for their go-to Xmas craft ideas. Here are a few of their favourites.

Salt Dough Ornaments

How to create

Make a simple dough from flour, salt, and water. Mix half salt to plain flour then add water until you can form it into a ball.

Roll out and cut into festive shapes (e.g. stars, trees, hearts).

Don't forget to make a hole at the top of your ornaments, so they can be threaded with string or ribbon for hanging on a tree.

Bake on a parchment-lined tray for approx. 3 hours on the lowest oven setting.

Once cooled, decorate with paint and glitter.

Why we love it!

It's tactile, creative, and gives children a keepsake they can hang on the tree year after year. It also supports fine motor skills and imaginative design.

Paper Plate Wreaths

How to create

Cut out the centre of a paper plate. Decorate the ring with green tissue paper, pom-poms, and ribbons to create a mini wreath.

Why we love it!

It's quick, inexpensive, and allows children to explore patterns and textures while making something they can proudly display at home or in the classroom.

Pinecone Christmas Trees

How to create

Collect pinecones. Paint them green then glue on tiny beads or sequins as "baubles". A small star on top completes the look!

Why we love it!

It connects craft with nature, encourages observation skills, and is perfect for outdoor learning links.

Sewn Felt Decorations

How to create

Using felt, embroidery thread, and simple stitches, children create festive shapes like baubles, stockings, trees, or gingerbread men. They can add buttons or sequins for detail.

Why we love it!

It introduces basic sewing skills and gives children a sense of accomplishment when they produce something durable and decorative.

Snow Globes

How to create

Fill jars with water, glitter, and a small figurine glued to the lid to create a homemade snow globe. If you add glycerine to the water, the glitter will fall more slowly.

Why we love it!

It feels magical and makes a lovely gift to take home.

Paper Plate Characters

How to create

Provide a selection of craft materials such as coloured paper, cotton wool balls, glittery balls, pipe cleaners, googly eyes etc. and let children glue them to a paper plate to create any Christmas themed character they choose.

Why we love it!

Children have free reign to be as creative and imaginative as they like.
