What could the Curriculum Review mean for Primary Schools?

The highly anticipated curriculum review, led by Professor Becky Francis, came out today (5th November).

The government has not yet accepted all the recommendations in the review.

The government aims to publish a revised national curriculum by spring 2027 with the new curriculum being implemented, in full, from September 2028.

The new curriculum will be available as a ‘digital product’ that will help teachers to ‘navigate content easily and to see and make connections across key stages and disciplines’.

Here are our 8 take-away headlines for Primary Education:

1.There will be a new oracy framework in both primary and secondary schools to ‘complement’ the existing reading and writing frameworks.

2.The existing writing assessment in year 6 will be ‘strengthened’ to identify those who need extra support.

3.The review has not recommended cutting back on primary tests.

4.The review proposes replacing the KS2 Spag test (grammar, punctuation and spelling) with new tasks.

5.There is a recommendation for the STA (Standards and Testing Agency) to explore different approaches for assessing progress of children with SEND both in the phonics screening and multiplication tables checks.

6.The review suggests they want more schools to use the optional KS1 assessments (SATs), helped by an ‘improved assessment framework’ with ‘greater focus on writing fluency’.

7.RE should become part of the national curriculum and the non-statutory guidance (2010) should be updated.

8.Citizenship is to be made compulsory in primary schools. This will include media and financial literacy and climate education.
