Celebrating World Environment Day at Sunflower Childcare Group: Helping Little Hands Grow a Greener World

Every year on 5th June , people all around the world celebrate World Environment Day—a special time to think about how we can take care of our Earth. At Sunflower Childcare Group, this day is a lovely reminder of how we can all play a part, no matter how small we are. It’s a chance for our children to learn, explore, and grow into kind and caring people of the planet.

Our Values: Caring, Sharing, and Looking After the Earth

At Sunflower, we believe in caring for each other and for nature. From planting seeds to feeding the worms in our compost bin, our children learn to look after the world around them. We talk about how we can all help by being gentle with living things, not wasting what we don’t need, and reusing items in clever and creative ways, indoors and out.

Nature is Our Teacher

Every day, we bring nature into our learning—whether it’s digging in the garden, splashing in puddles, or spotting bugs and birds in our forest school. Our little ones learn best when they’re hands-on and having fun, and that’s how we teach them about the environment too.

To celebrate World Environment Day, we enjoy lots of exciting, nature-based activities like:

  • Nature walks to spot mini-beasts, flowers, and birds

  • Planting seeds and digging in the garden—watching things grow is magical!

  • Planting seeds and digging in the garden—watching things grow is magical!

  • Crafting with recycled materials—turning "junk" into wonderful creations
  • Storytime around the firepit in forest school, sharing tales about animals, trees, and our lovely planet

These joyful moments help children feel connected to the Earth and spark their natural curiosity about how things grow and live.

Everyday Eco-Habits

Looking after the planet is something we do every day at Sunflower. Here’s how we keep things green:

  • We compost our food scraps to feed the garden

  • We recycle and reuse—paper, cardboard, old boxes, jars—you name it!

  • We use gentle cleaning products that are kind to little hands and the environment

  • We choose local and eco-friendly supplies whenever we can

We also love involving families in our green journey. Whether it’s swapping pre-loved clothes and toys, sharing eco-tips, or working on nature projects at home, we’re all growing a greener future together.

Green Tomorrow, One Sunflower at a Time

World Environment Day reminds us that even small steps—like turning off a light, planting a seed, or picking up a piece of litter—can help make the world a better place.

At Sunflower Childcare Group, we’re proud to help our children grow up loving and respecting the Earth. Through play, nature, and everyday kindness, we’re helping little hearts and hands make a big difference.

With many thanks to Dawn Gibbons for sharing the wonderful ways Sunflower Childcare Group nurtures a love for the environment in young minds—not just on World Environment Day, but every day!
